Whomping Willow
Whomping Willow
Whomping Willow doesn’t like anybody to roam in its space if encountered, it makes it ferocious. The Whomping Willow tree is one of the most popular fantasy trees of Modern literature. It came into view in the second book of the Harry Potter series, TheHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as a large tree on the fields of Hogwarts. The book reveals an unwanted facet of Whomping Willow when Harry Potter and his friend Ron Weasley while arriving in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, got their car accidentally crashed on a Whomping Willow tree. The Whomping Willow then reverts back by attacking and doing a serious damage to the car. Both boys get nearly killed but somehow manage to escape safely from the attacks.
Talking further, what you read above was just one side of the story. The Whomping Willow holds an unexpected secret which is revealed in the third book i.e. The Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in an incident where Ron Weasley gets dragged by Sirius Black, in the form of a large black wolf, into the secret passage located just beneath Whomping Willow. Harry Potter and Hermione Granger in an attempt to save Ron from being pulled into the passage survive the violent attacks of the tree and get landed into the secret passage. This secret passage is later revealed as a quick hideout for an old student of Hogwarts named Remus Lupin who was cursed to turn into a werewolf on a full-moon night. The passage leads to the Shrieking Shack present in the Hogsmeade village; thereby he could trap himself in the Shack preventing fellow students from being attacked. The time of presence of Remus Lupin was shared with the plantation of Whomping Willow on Hogwarts ground. The plantation of Whomping Willow with an intention to guard the entrance passage was the true reason behind Whomping Willow’s violent behaviour.
So entering into the secret passage was still a difficult task for everyone including Lupin. But pressing a particular knot present at the base of Whomping Willow can calm its behaviour for a while, making the entering task safer. Crookshanks helps Harry and Hermione to discover this fact in order to make a safe entrance.
Whomping Willow is also known for destroying Harry Potter's most treasured Nimbus 2000 broom, the reason which is still a mystery. The three friends’ later use the secret passage more frequently for safe stays in the shack.
The Whomping Willow is a ferocious but a significant tree planted on the grounds of Hogwarts to guard the secret passage present beneath it.
